Planners involvement in SHSP development
(Posted 9/14/2006 4:18:03 PM)
SAFETY-LU included planning (state and MPO/RC) in the list of experts to work with in developing SHSPs. Are there specific experiences that would suggest ways to enhance the interaction of planning with the SHSP development process?

Planners are often the first person the public talks to when they want a safety improvement. If the planners understood their role, or could define their role in SHSP implementation, they would be more likely to show up to SHSP plan development and provide useful, insightful input.

The SHSP development needs to include the planners, because the SHSP can and may be the Safety element of the statewide transportation plan (STP). The safety folks and the planners need to work together to determine how to incorporate the SHSP strategies and actions into the planning and programming processes, in the Plan and the STIP.
